Although a full new wayfinding system was not included in our brief, as part of the Mall environmental branding project (piloting in The Mall Luton) that we mentioned in a previous post, we had to design a new range of statutory symbols and directional icons for use on signage at entrances, escalators and toilet facilities.

I have been a fan of the Accessible Icon Project started by artists back in 2011, which attempted to redesign the universally used “disabled” symbol to make it more positive and inclusive and help to change the perception of disability.

I am pleased to say that we were able to acknowledge the work of that project in the redesign of the disabled toilet icon that formed part of our suite of symbols for The Mall.
